Frequently Asked Questions

Is an Annual Furnace Service really necessary?
Yes. Your furnace manufacturer, the gas inspector and Terasen Gas all strongly recommend an annual furnace service. An annual service will lower gas bills, extend equipment life, keep your home safe and improve system reliability resulting in fewer repairs. Believe me, yearly maintenance is much cheaper than repairs. And as an added incentive, there are no overtime charges for homeowners who put in the effort to keep their equipment maintained by having annual furnace services performed.

When should I have my furnace serviced?
The time of year has no bearing on the performance of your heating system. The most important element is consistency. Be it winter, spring, summer or fall . . . all you have to do is call, and we will be there to take care of you.  Although during the warm months, you will get more convenient appointment times as well as a financial incentive.

What brands of heating equipment does Paradise Gasworks service?
All brands and types.

How often should I change or clean my filter?
Filters should generally be checked once a month during heating season or if you utilize a summer fan switch.   Any filter that shows visible signs of dust or discoloration should be replaced. If your filter is not disposable, follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning. A clean filter is the best way for you to save on utility costs and repair bills.

How can I reduce dust?
Filter maintenance and filter quality are key. Inexpensive throwaway filters (5 - 10% efficient) can help catch some dust while pleated filers (20 - 30%) such as 3M are more efficient. The most effective solution is an electrostatic filter which traps up to 95% of indoor pollutants. Combine this with a summer fan switch and you'll have less dust in your home. An annual furnace service can also determine if your ductwork requires cleaning.

What are the benefits of an Electrostatic Filter?
Washability, permanence and high efficiency. True electrostatic filters are extremely efficient with ratings up to 95%. That means that they filter 95% of the particles that pass through them including pollens, mold and dust. Compare that to the 5 - 10% that is achieved by most throwaway filters. Allergy sufferers can benefit greatly with reduced pollen and mold in the air. Our electrostatic filters also come with a prescription form for people being treated for any respiratory problem or allergy, which allows you to write off the filter as a prescription or medical device.

Is it okay to run my furnace fan in the "ON" position instead of "AUTO"?
Yes, running your furnace with the fan switch set to "ON" keeps the air constantly circulating to make your home more comfortable and filters the air. Combine this with an electrostatic filter to reduce the dust in your home. During the warm months, the circulation will also provide a cooling effect. And this fan position uses very little electricity.

What is the most efficient thermostat setting for heat?
The best setting is the lowest temperature at which your family is comfortable. Most people are comfortable at a setting of 20-22 degrees C (68-70 F).You can save up 3% for each degree you lower your thermostat temperature.

Can a programmable thermostat save me money?
Yes, installing a programmable thermostat can save you up to 13% on heating costs. The thermostat will generally pay for itself within the first couple of seasons and will continue to save you money year after year. Programmable thermostats are also good for the environment since they help save energy. They allow flexibility to homeowners because they can be programmed to match your lifestyle. By simply planning your schedule, you can enjoy the benefits of personalized comfort and enhanced energy savings.

What is carbon monoxide?
Carbon monoxide is a odorless, tasteless and colorless gas that is a byproduct of fuel burning. Carbon monoxide is not a normal byproduct of natural gas. Carbon monoxide can only reach dangerous levels in natural gas equipment when there isn't enough oxygen in the fuel-burning process or if the chimney or other flues are blocked.

How can I prevent a carbon monoxide buildup?
Have an annual furnace service performed yearly. In 29 years of working with gas equipment, I have never come across a carbon monoxide accident in properly maintained equipment.
